The inbuilt resilient packet ring (RPR) based multi-service transport platform (MSTP) technique can solve many problems which include the pressure of increasing demand on the bandwidth as the IP-flow increases rapidly, the failures in maintaining the high bandwidth utilization ratio and transmitting amount in congested cases, and the failures in maintaining the balance among the nodes and recovering from the troubles in the transmit media or the nodes, and the failures in using as soon as the node being insetted in the network etc. Therefore, it has a bright application prospect and attracts extensive attention in communication industry recently.Although lots of domestic and international producers have already introduced the available equipments embedded with RPR technology, the application and test instances of the metropolitan area network (MAN) have not been reported. Meanwhile, the standardization of RPR is still going on. In this paper, on the basis of the analysis of advantages and disadvantages in dealing with the Ethernet approaches in the MAN, a set of MSTP networks with in-built RPR is set up and the schemes to test the functions and performances of RPR network are established. Moreover, two RPR rings with bandwidth of 622M are tested. Compared with the performances of other MSTP techniques in dealing with Ethernet approaches, the MSTP networks with in-built RPR has the factions on the space multiplexing, the business grade, the flexible alignment of bandwidth, the protection mechanism of 50 ms, finding and renewing the structure of the network spontaneously etc, and the advantages in performance such as time delay, jitter, throughput, the loss rate of bag, back-to-back, and so on. The application instance of an integrated MSTP network with in-built RPR is given by testing and researching, and an effective reference for constructing MSTP network with in-built RPR in the future and optimizing current MAN is provided as well.Based on the confirmation of the functions and performances of MSTP networks with in-built RPR, several approaches of networks construction for RPR ring have been analyzed and several application instances utilizing the MSTPnetworks with in-built RPR to offer the Ethernet approaches in MANs have been introduced. Furthermore, some problems rising in the network constructions, the establishment of the test scheme, and the testing progress have been researched, such as stepping treatment of the business among different rings, alignment of AO business, and defect in the present fair algorithms, and so on.
