The rapid development of multimedia communication services promotes greatly the fast development and transformation of the communication industry. To construct an aggregate, reliable and high speed voice and data network, various kinds of means have been adopted to accelerate the optimization and upgrade of existing network. As to the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) in charge of information transfer and communication between the backbone and access network, even more attention has been paid to it. Along with the development of broad band IP MAN and the demand on new services, a higher demand about the comprehensive performance has been put forward by the telecom carrier. A new protocol which has combined the advantages of Ethernet, ATM and SDH, i.e. Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) becomes a new choice for technology of MAN. Based on the analysis about the development tendency of MAN, the principle and technical realization of RPR have been researched in this paper. Through the research and test on the experiment network of Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP), with major products which are based on RPR technology compared and evaluated, the feasibility of RPR to be adopted in telecom operation network has been verified. By comparison with other existing MAN platform, the advantages of a MAN which is constructed by MSPP based on RPR technology, has been researched and analyzed. A feasible network structure scheme which provides multi-services of MAN has been suggested. Consequently the advice for RPR selection and its sphere of application have been concluded, and, considering the technical development tendency, a feasible proposal about the construction technology trend of MAN in future years has been presented.
