Resilient optical burst ring (ROBR) combines the advantages of resilient packet ring (RPR) and optical burst switching (OBS). Besides supporting burst services and transmitting burst data packets transparently which are held by OBS, ROBR can implement offset time management, recovery and protection, fairness and QoS based on relevant RPR protocols. ROBR is becoming a promising solution for realizing Optical MAN.First, the actuality and development of optical MAN are introduced. Resilient optical burst ring is proposed based on the concepts and characters of optical burst switching and resilient packet ring.Afterwards, the key technologies of ROBR are presented, including ROBR networks architecture, the function architecture of ROBR nodes, ROBR reference model, scheduling and offset time management strategies. ROBR—ns is also developed based on network simulator 2, which is suitable for ROBR networks simulation.Then, two key technologies of ROBR are researched thoroughly. In the scheduling strategies, two algorithms for channel allocation and scheduling in ROBR networks are proposed. They are called destination channel priority (DCP) and source channel priority (SCP).
