Carbon anode products are main raw material for the electrolytic aluminum industry. The production technology of carbon anode develops quickly at present. However, the development of calcination techniques of rotary kiln, compared with the other processes in carbon anode production, is slow. Carbon calcinations is critical to the development of the aluminum industry. The process of carbon calcination is comparatively complex. Because it is chronically operated by man, and there is little scientific guidance for field-work, leading to unstable work conditions and low production efficiency. In response to these problems, the development of a rotary kiln automatic control system, to apply modern achievements in automation to the calcination process, is favorably considered to be able to significant in improving the kiln working condition and the quality of calcined cokes, and automating the production flow.In view of the feeding fluctuation and feeding inaccuracy problems with rotary kiln feeding systems during actual operation, this paper researches, on an in-depth analysis of the rotary kiln carbon calcination techniques, the calcination temperature-critical factor, viz feeding, and proposes an rotary kiln constant feeding control system, adopting the improved PID control algorithm, in a bid to improve production automation and product quality while maintaining stable production.An improved feeding process PID control algorithm and its implementation in PLC, together with an interlock control strategy and coordination control algorithm, the undisturbed switching method between the running modes to enhance the system reliability and the system redundancy, are presented in this paper. With Wince configuration software and STEP 7 for S7-300 PLC of Siemens, real-time monitoring, on-line fault diagnosis and undisturbed switching between different control modes are realized.This automatic control system for petroleum coke calcination in rotary kiln is already put into use in a carbon enterprise. The practical application shows that the system is with high reliability and practicability.
