The process of carbon calcination is comparatively complex, because it is chronically operated by man, such that there is little scientific guidance for field-work and the ending results are unstable work condition and low production efficiency. In order to solve the problems, the present important achievements of automation are applied to the calcination process and the research of calcinations' auto-control systems. We consider that it can be tremendously significant to improve the quality of calcined coke and optimize the production.In this paper, the calcination process of a rotary kiln of Qinghai branch of China Aluminum Company(CHALCO) is taken as the research object. Based on the analysis of the effect of calcination temperature on quality of calcined coke, an auto-control system is developed to stabilize the feeding flux and negative pressure which are the two main factors affecting the temperature. First, the structure and functions of the system are presented. Second, aimed to the characteristics of time-lag performance and random disturbance in the feeding system and uncertain external disturbance in the pressure system, the controllers are designed by means of self-adapting algorithm and PID algorithm respectively. At last the programmed software is described.With Wince configuration software and STEP 7 for S7-300 PLC of Siemens, real-time monitoring, on-line fault diagnosis and undisturbed switching between different control modes are implemented. The practical application shows that the system is with high reliability and practicability.
