Target height information provided by surveillance radar is fundamental for threat evaluation, command decision, weapon guidance in air defense operation. Digital signal processing system of the height finding radar is designed to detection target under passive jamming and clutter. Field programmable gate array(FPGA) has the advantages of high-speed, perfect for parallel and pipelining processing, ability of reconfiguration, Thereby becoming more important in radar signal processing system.In this paper principles and constitution of the height finding radar signal processing system are first analyzed. Then time domain and frequency domain pulse compression of linear frequency modulated(LFM) signal, Moving target indicator(MTI)/moving target detection(MTD), and constant false alarm rate(CFAR) are mainly studied. The methods in common use are chosen and simulated in MATLAB. Last the signal processing modules are realized by utilizing the Xilinx's IP cores and VHDL language under Xilinx ISE6.3i software integration environment, and also tested and verified in timing simulation by Modelsim.
