As the development of modern wireless communication a lot of higher requirements have been proposed for antenna such as miniaturization, low weight, low loss and price. The development of conventional microstrip antenna is limited due to high loss in high frequency band and big size in low frequency band. Dielectric resonator antenna has being a hot point, and be paid more attention because it has lots of advantages such as small size, low medium loss, no surface wave loss, simple feed mode and it can be designed to any 3D shape.First, the research status of dielectric resonator antenna in home and abroad is summarized. Then introduce several main directions of dielectric resonator antenna abroad and discuss the principle and advantages of dielectric resonator. Especially, discuss the feed mode of the dielectric resonator antenna.Based on the study of dielectric resonator and the theory of antenna, design a microstrip-slot coupled antenna which worked at the frequency of 9.5GHz, measured result show that the antenna have a good performance, the gain of the antenna is 5.8dB,and the return loss reach to -30dB. Based on the cell element, design two antenna arrays, the eight element linear array and the sixteen element planar array. The basic characteristics of the linear array are as follows: the gain is 12.5dB, and the half-power beamwidth is 11deg, and the side lobe level is -10.9 dB. The basic characteristics of the planar array are as follows: the gain is 15.6dB; the H plane half-power beamwidth is 18deg, the side lobe level is -12.6dB; and the E plane half-power beamwidth is 23 deg, the side lobe level is -11.9dB .The measured result accord with the simulated. At last, we discuss the mutual coupling of the dielectric resonator antenna array; pay more attention of the dielectric resonator antenna element located in different position, the mutual coupling affect the performance of the antenna, and discuss how mutual affect the radiation pattern. It is proved that the mutual coupling have little effect on the dielectric resonator antenna array. The dielectric resonator antenna has much potential to application.
