With the rapid development of modern radar technology, the role of radar systems are not limited only in war, but in civilian areas either, such as radar navigation, mapping, and other functions also play a very important role.To test a radar system, a field test has to spend a lot of manpower and financial resources; moreover, there is no flexibility, and enhanced research and development cycle. At the same time, there are too many uncontrollable factors in a field test, which make radar adjustment more difficult. Radar signal simulator is a combining product of digital simulation technology and radar technology. It can produce a simulated radar signal to test a radar system even when there isn't any front-end equipment of actual radar systems. To simulate a radar signal through radar simulation technology, we can achieve repeatability, that is to say, we can make the same situation many times under the radar simulation performance. It is easy for analysis. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop a wide range of the radar signal simulator. Through in-depth study on radar system and the principles of radar signal simulation, I have analyzed the key modules of a radar signal simulator and concluded with the realization of radar signals with the Doppler frequency shift and clutters; finally, I realize the entire radar signal simulator design on a FPGA chip.This independent development of radar signal simulator can be divided into signal transmission, Doppler frequency, clutter and noise, the distance delay four main modules. Synchronized circuit design and line-stream structure are used in the circuit, so that the speed can be improved. Algorithm verification and circuit simulation are adopted in this design. The circuit hardware design and implementation are completed through Verilog HDL language, and EDA software are used to simulate and verify the circuit. Finally, on a Xilinx Virtex-4fx12 FPGA chip, the circuit achieve the functions and performance verification. Commissioning results showed that the design can complete the design requirements of video frequency from 20 MHz to 50 MHz. This design can complete several radar signal simulations such as uniform pulse string signal, LFM signal and QAM signals. This independent development of radar signal simulator for the development of domestic radar signal simulation technology has a certain value. Based on the SOPC signal generator design, products can be modified and upgraded according to demand of users flexibly.
