This project chooses Nios II soft core processor as the control unit which meets the request of high quality MP3 playing and controlling. The up-to-date embedded technology is applied to set a two-CPU environment in order to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, which make it possible to play music and display lyric at the same time. It combines powerful control function and flexible configure character to make the MP3 player more intelligent and smaller. Presently the audio and video systems based on soft core are still on the stage of research and development. This project will provide a reference design and promote the development of the application system based on soft core processor.A complete MP3 player system consists of several parts: CPU, decoder, storage device, display interface and control parts. The common CPU in a MP3 player is always a hard core processor of ARM series, while the MP3 player based on a soft core processor has a control center with a embedded MCU and a MP3 data processing center with a hardware decoder chip or a software decoder module. Playing, displaying and controlling functions are performed by plenty of peripheral equipments. Now the MP3 player system based on FPGA soft core processor is just achieved on lab and in its developing stage, and working without the lyric displaying function. But lyric displaying is one of the most important functions of the player according to the higher enjoy level of music lovers, and a multifunctional MP3 player which can be heard and watched is the necessary tendency.This project introduces the latest SOPC technology, using Nios II processor to design drive circuit of peripheral equipments such as out-chip memory, LED, seven segment numeral, key, SD card, LCD and audio decoder, using embedded programming to initialize peripheral equipment, to read and deal with data, to decode and output audio file and to display lyrics.Through the experiment test, it can be proved that the embedded MP3 player system realized by SOPC have high stability, practicability and expansibility.
