As human society entered the digital era, the audio and video-based multimedia technology is experiencing rapid changes.People no longer satisfied with just the enjoyment of hearing, they want to view digital content like photos, movies and TV in a mobile platform. This trend will require us to expand our study fields from audio to video, and then make PMP becomes the new hot consumer electronic product. At the same time, the semiconductor industry itself has been standing at the threshold of a new era, the linewidth develops to less than 90nm. The rapid development of microelectronic technology and the high integration IC, makes the chip more complexity with lower cost ever than befor. While FPGA is being developed in the direction which contents more and more logic elements, with high performance, low cost and low power. So, SOPC technology becomes an inevitable trend. From the intersection of multimedia and SOPC technology, we proposed a design plan of PMP embedded system based on a Altera's cyclonII EP2C35 FPGA using SOPC technology. IP Reuse, hardware/software co-design and hardware acceleration were used to designe the PMP system based on Nios II core processor. Finally, we achieved photo viewing, MP3 playing, MPEG4 simple profile decoding & playing and electronic book reading functions. So,the success of this design is very meaningful for applying SOPC technology in the field of PMP. The system has many advantages such as: small, design flexibility, short development cycle and so on.
