Recently, the fast development of high-speed computer network, digital video compression and mass storage technologies make the media streaming service application be reality. But the improvement of traditional media streaming system performance can not satisfy the requirement of the practice application, and the increase of the large users often leads to the bandwidth bottleneck of server. Media streaming system based on p2p technology can decentralize the service, alleviate the server loading and distribute media streaming content in a larger scale.Firstly, this paper studies several P2P media streaming model technologies at home and abroad, and introduces the develop process and actuality of P2P technology, character and transmission control protocol of media streaming technology and specialty of Gossip. Secondly, the paper introduces several typical P2P media streaming model, analyzes their different characteristics, and makes the comparison among them. Thirdly, the paper builds a media streaming service model called LMSMSG which adhibits the layered management and structure Gossip, describes the system structure and function, data organization, peer management and optimize, presents the buffer memory scheduling scheme, and designs the algorithm of structure Gossip and data scheduling. Finally, the paper researches the application of LMSMSG to the distance education, analyzes the function objective and operational mode of distance teaching system, and designs the system's function, presents the key technologies and solution.The results of analysis indicate that the Gossip-based model is simple and it shows good performance, which compares to the tree-based and mesh-based model, and LMSMSG model is of good scalability, reliability, and high efficiency, and it will further promote the distance teaching pattern to apply the model for modern distance education.
