Software Configuration Management For Small And Medium-sized Software Companies

Being a basic supporting methodology of software development and maintenance, SoftwareConfiguration Management (SCM) includes a series of methods, tools and processes. At present,SCM has become an important step in software project. It also has become a necessity in manysoftware project standards. Through the ways of identifying, record, control and tracking etc,SCM manages and controls the whole process of software development and maintenance.Project of the software is larger and larger in recent years, complexity is higher andhigher, people have to pay more attention to the SCM. SCM has become an importantcontent of the software management. The basic theory of SCM has become maturitycomparatively, but when software enterprises decide to carry it out, none of the existingtheories could tell them how. They always found it difficult to practice SCM.In this thesis, the present status of the software enterprise and the challengeconfronted are analyzed. Based on the theory of SCM and combined with the practice ofthe software enterprise, we present a practical solution of SCM for develop team ofmedium or less scale. In this solution, we make the work flow, specifications andoperation methods for configuration management in software development. In thissolution, a version control system based on CVS is introduced to help to manage thecomplex tasks. Finally we carry out the solution with a typical project case. With the helpof the solution we implement an economic SCM which improves the softwaredevelopment and management of the software enterprise obviously with less cost and lesstime-spending.
