Nowadays, there are three kinds of Passive Optical Network (PON): the PON based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (APON), the PON based on Ethernet technology (EPON) and the Gigabit-PON (GPON). As a broadband access network with the purpose of achieving full service access, GPON has many advantages, especially in its TC layer. This paper mainly deals with the GPON key technologies, related technique of GPON Optical Network Termination (ONT), and the overall design scheme, the main content of the paper is as follows:Firstly, this paper discusses about the GPON development actuality, comparing of different PON, and advantages of GPON. Then, according to the newest GPON G.984 recommendation, it analyses the network structure and layered model of GPON system. Based on the principle layered model of the TC layer, it makes research on its main functions and working theory.Secondly, this paper analyses the key functions of ONT in the GPON system and the service types it supports. Combined with the network layered structure and each layer's functions of ONT, it puts forward layered designing scheme of ONT. Then, on the basis of analyzing the characteristic of the System on Programmable Chip (SoPC), the paper brings forward the SoPC designing method of ONT, the software and hardware environment, the overall designing scheme and its development flow. At last, modularized designing method of the GTC layer and its scheme is given on the basis of GTC layer functions, according to this, the paper analyses the working theory of key modules of this layer, finally, services multiplexing technique of the upstream direction is discussed.Thirdly, based on the characteristics of GPON production at home and abroad, the paper illustrated the existing problems of GPON, then, its market applications and orientation and finally makes the prospect of GPON.
