The research of virtual reality system is a developing frontier and a research hotspot of the computer application currently. The modeling and rendering technology of virtual environment can be separated into two types, graphic based rendering and image based rendering. Panorama is an important application field of image based rendering technology.This paper makes a summarization of the current situation and theoretical basis of image based rendering technology, and mainly researches panorama browsing technology based on fish-eye images. To make panorama images by circular fish-eye images, the paper brings forward a systematic scheme, which includes several approaches such as image gathering, image calibration, image pretreatment, image mosaic, image amalgamation and the browsing reprojection of panoramas.In the part of calibrating fish-eye images, the paper presents a tangent method to find the center and the radius of the circular area; in the part of the image mosaic, the paper presents a two staged mosaic scheme, which adopts a cursory mosaic on the base of a phase-relative method based on two dimensional Fourier transform, and a precise mosaic based on the characteristic of edge grads. Results of experiments show a pixel level precision of the scheme.Finally, the browsing of the panoramas in the network environment is achieved with some optimizing approaches.
