The technology of virtual reality is a new hotspot arising in recent years. It can create a virtual world by computers, which allow users observe the virtual objects interactively. Image-based rendering (IBR) technology is a new method. Based on analyzing, studying and summarizing basic theoretics about virtual reality technology currently in world and some typical applied system, the dissertation goes deep into the theory, method and technology to create virtual scenes using IBR. Image stitching is one of the key points of creating virtual scenes using IBR, and it's one of the emphases of the dissertation. A panel creating panorama is constructed in the paper. Followed by the steps of image projection, matching and smoothing, we can create a panorama through the panel. The pictures used to create panorama are taken from different directions, so their projection surfaces have certain angles. To maintain the restricted relationship and visual consistency among real scenes, we should project all the partial images to the same curved surface. In the paper, it's achieved by choosing cylinder as projection surface. After partial discrete images are projected, image stitching must be taken in order to gain spacial set of viewpoints, which the pictures have the same viewpoint but different view angles. It's very important to raising the speed of stitching image. On the basis of summarizing and analyzing previous work, and integrating the character of panoramic image stitching this paper brings forward an algorithm based on feature lines. At the same time, it brings some criterion to evaluate the image matching error. After image matching, there exists obvious mosaic trace if superposing two pictures simply as a result. It's settled effectively using the weighted smoothing algorithm with threshold. The method and experimentation are given in the paper. It proves that we can get ideal panorama using the method in the dissertation.
