Zibo, in Shandong province, is a city combining historical culture and civilization of modern industry, as well as one of the important places with rich literature resources in the province. For a long time, not much attention has been paid to the study of library history in this unique cultural area. This paper gives a pilot study on the historical sites of ancient library in Zibo, and specially a careful and detailed research and study on the family library of Bi Ziyan, who was a dignitary in late Ming dynasty, and whose family was gentlefolk in Shandong. By historical data collecting and realistic interview, stage achievement has been made, hoping to contribute a bit to perfecting the history of library and local culture in Ming and Qing dynasties. At the same time, Pu Songling, the famous litterateur in early Qing dynasty who was called "the king of short stories in the world", had taught in Bi's mansion for over 30 years, and was the biggest user and beneficiary of Bi's library. Some materials about Pu's life of reading and his works have also been researched and sorted in this paper, specially, the relation between Pu's using of Bi's library and his literary production were analyzed, wishing to benefit more to the study of Pu's culture. There are four parts in this paper.It is introduction in part one, which is illustrating the background and significance of choosing this topic, methodology and approaches of research as well. Meanwhile, a brief introduction to historical data of ancient private library in Zibo is briefed too.Part two and three are the main parts of the paper. In part two, a research has been made on Bi Ziyan's library and his book collection, anatomizing the origin of his family library; and life and stories of three important persons during the silver age of the library; how the books were collected, read, written, and printed; and how the library was managed and used. Meanwhile, an overall assessment has been made on the scale and quality of Bi's library, and the location, structure of buildings, names of buildings and rooms were also researched and studied, with full and accurate data. Losing of works and books in Bi's library were also summarily described, meanwhile, a careful search was taken to the literature in which the books left behind were recorded.Part three is an important part as well, in which Pu Songling's using of Bi's library was paid much attention to. Pu's life of his early years, in Bi's mansion, and late years were all narrated briefly. To reveal the interaction between his literary production and using of Bi's library, Pu's life of reading, teaching and writing in Bi's mansion were researched and analyzed, and hence the quality and value in use of Bi's library were stood out.Part four are the conclusion. Keeping to the point of this paper, based on the previous research and analysis, this part deduced a rule of private libraries, including Bi's, in Zibo during Ming and Qing dynasties, i.e., they collect books not for collection, not for enjoying, and not for profit, but for reading and pursuing their and their offspring's studies. This culture of collecting books impersonally promoted the development and prosperity of culture undertaking of both families and the place, played a notable positive role in the overall development and the progress of civilization of the society. |
