With the development of high speed image processing, the soft-core processing technology of image processing system has become a hotspot of research. The fast development of micro-electronics technology has laid the hardware foundation for high speed image processing system. The build-in soft-core processor of FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) satisfies the need of speed, integration and dependability in image processing system.The main object of this project is to create our own IP core. Because the video display subsystem has been widely used in image processing field, it is very important and valuable to develop a reusable VGA IP core.Based on the above consideration, a project entitled "SOC using Altera's high performance Stratix FPGA" has been developed in this thesis. The design of video display subsystem is completed by cooperating hardware and software methods. The hardware module is devised for D/A conversion, in order to transform digital signal into analog signal. Software module is designed by compiling IP (Intellectual Property) core to complete the VGA controller. The IP Core in this project is programmed through VHDL language and has been compiled and simulated by Quartus II and ModelSim EDA tools. Source codes and experiment results have been given in this thesis.
