This paper studies the operational theory of range measurement loop of precision instrument radar. Based on this theory, it further analyzes and calculates each factor which will influence the performance of the range measurement loop, extrapolate the algorithm for calculating the parameters such as equivalent noise bandwidth of tracking loop, accomplishes relevant simulation analysis, and provide results suitable for engineering application. In order to give a systematic and comprehensive knowledge of range measure measurement, this paper also introduce range measurement, range/Doppler coupling effect, range vernier technology.First, this paper introduce basic concept of precision tracking radar and current development of range measurement technology. Then , it presents basic theory and structural composition of range measurement. Based on this, this paper analyzes performance specification of range measurement loop with compute simulation. It also analyzes and simulates range/Doppler effect on range measurement. In addition, this paper presents the vernier technology based on the phase measurement. Finally, this paper provides design samples of range measurement system for precision tracking radar.
