MPEG-4 is an international standard developed by ISO/IEC Motion Pictures Experts Group, and released in the early of 1999. As the successor of MPEG-1, MPEG-2, it adopted the newly Object-based coding technology. It has high efficiency of coding, interactivity based on object and scalability. So MPEG-4 is widely used in many fields like INTERNET, low bit rate multimedia communication, real-time monitoring system and high definition motion pictures.PMP is called the video product of MP3, it adopts MPEG-4 to complete video compression and playback. It is known "MP4" as well. This paper discussed the implementation of MPEG-4 in the consumer electronics product on the basis of PMP developed by our company. During development of PMP, all features were completed by the circuit design and the firmware developing, including video input, A/D converting, compression, storage, decoding and displaying on LCD. MPEG-4 is used for video codec. This PMP platform employs SOC chipset-SPCA536 that hard-wired accelerated engine was built in, and some devices. It can finish implementation of MPEG-4 video real-time codec and playback under the control of firmware.
