Video monitoring can be directly perceived through the sense. Because of its richness and convenience, it is used widely by safety guard, product management, and so on. It plays an important role in the environment monitoring. And, the video codec technology is the key in video monitoring.The aim of our project is to meet the need of video monitoring hard disk recorder, in which a video codec system based on MPEG-4 is applied. In this thesis, the software of video encoder is discussed mainly.Through carefully researching the codec algorithm of MPEG-4, analyzing and comparing various design schemes of video compression system at present, we determine to adopt the applied scheme based on high-speed DSP and choose the excellent processor- Blackfin533, which is produced by ADI Inc.The paper particularly introduces the software realization of the video encoder. And especially dissertates key methods aimed at solving the real-time problem of the system. At last, the test results are proposed here, which prove that the video encoder arrives at the design goal of the project.The Introduction briefly presents the basic methods of video coding, the structure of block-based hybrid coding frame and the chief characteristics of video coding standards.Chapter II elaborates on the hardware environment of the developement, including the character of DSP, peripheral interface, pipelining and so on.Chapter III elaborates on the character of MPEG-4 standard video part and the new techniques being adopted and main function modules. Based on this, we developed a new, optimized arithmetic of motion estimation. We discuss the selection of encoder module also.In chapter IV, we considered the character of hardware and discusses the optimization of encoder in structure, coding, bus,CPU. The efficiency of encoder is greatly improved.Finally we conclude this dissertation and points out future research directions.
