As the one of major types in the multimedia application, after digitalized, video images make a flood of data quantity. This put forward the information processing and storage equipment, and also the imformation trsansmission network the very high request and become the bottleneck to the multimedia applications. Therefore, to research the effective compression algorithm for video data is of great significance for the improvement of mufti-media system performance and enlargement of mufti-media system application. Among many video compression standards,MPEG-4 represents the second generation compression coding technology which is based on the model/object.MPEG-4 makes full use of human eye visual identity, seize the essence of transmission of image information, proceed from the picture outline and veins, and support the interactive function based on the visual content. With its advanced coding idea, effective compression efficiency, low bandwidth requirements, high quality of image reconstruction and conformability with the trends of multimedia application which support the accessing, searching and operating based on the visual content,MPEG-4 will still be the mainstream video compression standard for a sustained period in the future[1][3].As a result of the connection of the MPEG system code technology, this article first introduced some related characteristics of MPEG-l,MPEG-2 and the MPEG-4, and emphatically studied the code technology of MPEG-4 from some aspects, such as shape code, possibly extended code, sprite code, video system synthesis and so on. then emphatically studied the shape coding, possibly extended coding, sprite coding, video system synthesis and some other code technologies, which based on the MPEG-4,and then through the establishing of a mobile communication system model to carry out the MPEG-4 code compression for a section of QCIF format image.
