The Bibliography in 20th century China underwent a process of gradual independence from other subjects and swift development, from the classification of documentation, synthesis of working experience, to the abstraction and generalization of relevant theories, and the micro- and macro-leveled synthetic survey, with various achievements in Classical Bibliography, Modern Bibliography and Specialized Bibliography. Since 1970's, the focus of Bibliographical work and studies in the West and China has been diverted by the research and development of technical system. The interweaving efforts in both Bibliographical and informational work, with a main stream of Bibliographical study on the theories of informational retrieval, result in many studies of informatics on the characteristics and functions of Bibliography from various perspectives, and profoundly influence the development of correspondent researches in China. However, there is no systematic outcome of comparative studies on the basic theories and development of Bibliography between the West and China, which motivated the present study. The thesis, therefore, is to compare the different realms of Western and Chinese Bibliographical researches by means of reviewing their historical origins, developments and basic theories, on the basis of which it also proposes that Chinese Bibliography should be enriched and developed in two aspects, namely, the approaches in Bibliographical study and documentation protection in the Informational Era.
