The Narrative Analysis Of Pulitzer Prize Works For Feature Writing

38 feature writing papers have been awarded since 1979,when Pulitzer Prize for feature writing was set up.As we know,feature writing is one of the news types which are good at telling story.Since the main form of feature writing is “storytelling”,it is actually a popular expression of narrative.Therefore,this research is studied from the perspective of narratology.The analysis samples of this study are 38 award-winning works from 1979 to 2018.The research method is case study and text analysis,supplemented by certain quantitative analysis.Based on the related theories of narratology,the author constructs the analytical framework of this study.At the level of narrative story,the author attempts to find out what kind of stories is welcomed among all these awarded works through the concept of narrative themes.In the level of narrative discourse,research angle includes the narrator,narrative perspective,narrative time and narrative structure.By studying these narrative elements,the author tries to ask another question—how to tell a story.The study finds works of Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing are good at describing the behaviors and sufferings of ordinary people,showing how they fight against fate.Besides,the awarded works have the following narrative characteristics.Firstly,the identity of narrators is diverse,including the public narrator,the absent narrator and the hiding narrator.Secondly,the narrative perspective mainly adopts complex angles according to the article.Thirdly,in the narrative time,the form of “flashback+order”has been widely used in the awarded works,which can make the story with quirky twist.Lastly,the narrative structure of the intersecting lines makes the article complement each other in fact reporting and humanity.
