With the improvement of Internet and sensor techniques, it is an important tendency to combine the smart transducer technology with the Internet technology to develop the next generation of sensors, which enables the sensors to own the ability of TCP/IP-based communication at the device level. That is a significant step towards building telemonitoring network based on the present Internet infrastructure. After a careful discussion of the smart network transducer standard, i.e. IEEE 1451 Standard, this dissertation presents an Internet-enabled smart transducer model and realizes its full working prototype. Moreover, several experiments are designed to verify the feasibility and validity of the proposed solution.First of all, the IEEE 1451 protocol is studied, especially the definition of the network capable application processor (NCAP) in IEEE 1451.1 and the definition of the smart transducer interface module and the transducer electronic data sheet in IEEE 1451.2. By the way, a system prototype of the smart network interface of sensors is determined. The STIM is full compliant with IEEE 1451.2 standard and includes some specific transducers, Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS), addressing logic, etc. It owns the functions to acquire data and other abilities, for instance self-description. Cooperating with each other through a transducer interface, the two parts aforementioned realize the functions of the proposed network Sensor .And highlights the implementation of key technologies, such as TEDS and correction engine are provided.A virtual network capable application processor based on PC is developed. VNCAP implements the TCP/IP protocol and web service, and provides the standard user interface based on web browsers, which make the network sensor Internet visible and capable . Correction engine and data processing are implemented. A Virtual TEDS is also implemented. Finally, some experiments are made to verify the functions of the STIM and VNCAP. The results experimentally show that they are feasible and suitable for Internet-based applications, especially for the non-critical real-time applications such as remote monitoring. Excellent performances of the proposed network sensor are also obtained.
