With the increasing use of multimedia technologies, image compression requires higher performance as well as new features. To meet such need in the special area, ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29 WG1 has development a new standard for still images, the JPEG2000 standard. It has not only provided rate-distortion performance and subjective image quality superior to existing standards, but also provided features and functionalities that current standards can either not address efficiently or in many cases can not address at all, such as lossy and lossless compression, progressive transmission, region of interest coding. Due to its superior features, JPEG2000 has broad potential application fields, e.g. web browsing, remote sensing, digital photography, digital library and mobile applications.However, advantages of JPEG2000 come at the expense of computational complexity and memory requirement especially digital wavelet transformation and embedded block coding with optimal truncation (EBCOT). So to design a commercial system especially in hardware implementation with real-time is a challenge to JPEG2000.According the problem mentioned above, we designed and realized JPEG2000 algorithm part I based on DSP of Tl. This module chooses TM320C6416-one of the fastest DSP on which all program codes are written by c and assembly language. Also, the software is optimized to use the features of DSP. Inline-functions, linear assembly language are used to realize real time. Among several modules in JPEG2000 encoder, the algorithms for DWT and EBCOT comprise more than 85% of encoding complexity. Thus, an overlapped block transferring method is utilized to improve the performance of the algorithm for DWT by increasing the cache hit-rate.Tests and experiments show that the performance of JPEG2000 in low-bit-rate compression is better than that of JPEG, also, the encoder system, adopted theoptimized algorithms , has much better performance of real-time.
