The design for IC(integrated circuit) has already reached into the level of designing a SOC(system on chip). However, with the increasing scale of SOC, the problem is not whether a chip is able to accommodate to the design for a complex system, but how the design catches up with increasing speed of complexity for designing a chip and meets requirements that the fierce market competition is strict with the time that products come into market. Nowadays, a design based chip cores becomes a trend towards the EDA development. It is promising to develop IP(Intellectual Property) cores with independent intellectual property right. The IP core can be set different function by programming with software, and used in various embedded MCU system. The application of embedded IP core, which reduced the cost and period of design, has become an important present design method of SOC. The PIC MCU series are applied widely nowadays and has strong function. It is significant for various embedded system and SOC to build PIC MCU IP core, hence the research "the design of 8-bit MCU IP core with RISC architecture" is a useful attempt and practice.During the design, the system architecture, instruction system and system timing of PIC16C5 × series MCU were analyzed firstly, and then the entire MCU core was partitioned with a top-down methodology that systematically partitions a complex design into smaller functional units that can be designed and verified individually and more easily. A feasible RISC MCU IP module whose instructions were compatible with the ones of PIC MCU series was built. All modules were achieved by using Verilog HDL and IP core technology, simulated, synthesized and verified with some EDA tools. The results showed that the MCU IP core can correctly execute most of instructions and meet the performance of PIC16C5× MCU series.
