The acquisition, analysis and record of a variety of signals including malfunction signals in the automation process, such like steel production, are paramount issues for the control and management of the modern production. With the development of the computer software and hardware technologies, application of the visual instruments has been a tendency in the measuring area. Therefore developing the novel visual instruments suited for the different industrial environments has also become a hot problem faced for the researching and production-managing units. In this thesis, I proposed a multifunctional visual instrument, in which the software-developing platform was based on Labviev of NI Company and the hardware was mainly based on a laptop computer and a PCMCIA data acquisition card, together with a particular self-made signal conditioner board. The proposed system could easily implements in the installation of the system specifications, the control of the data acquisitions and the data analysis and processing just through adjusting the software. The system has shown a good interface between man and machine and had met the real needs of the production field.Firstly, the basic ideas of the visual instruments and their developments are introduced in the thesis; Then, the structure and key techniques of the visual instruments are discussed; After that, the functions and designs of hardware, including encoder, signal conditioner and the data acquisition unit, are illustrated in detail; Later on, the systematic software based on the Labview and its functional modules are analyzed, in which encoder measured on-line, the data acquisition, storage, processing and display are covered; At last, the procedure and results of the experiments on the hardware and software of the visual system are testified in practice.The system is run in the environment of the Window 2000/XP and programmed in functional modules. The experimental results showed the design of the visual instrument system is acceptable and reliable. The scheme of the system has good expansibility and high ratio of quality and cost, is easy to be developing and used by engineer.
