Electronic Design Automation is a revolution in the field of electronic design, and it is in high development at present. Using Programmable Logic Device (PLD) extensively is one of the most important methods to improve electronic products' capability and competitive ability, so PLD devices should be popularized. A small optical fiber communication system based on PLD is designed in this paper.At first, the paper confirms the whole design scheme and main technical index of the optical fiber communication system. It indicates the choice of PLD type and how to configure. Therefore, system on programmable chip is established.Secondly, the paper discusses how to design and realize this system. The transmit subsystem is based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and the receiving subsystem is based on Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD). According to "top-down" frame, the transmit subsystem is divided into 4 comparatively independent modules: time division multiplexing signal source, PCM encoder and decoder, channel coding (AMI, HDB3, CMI, disturbed code, 5B6B), digital modulation (2ASK, 2PSK, 2FSK, 2DPSK). The receiving subsystem includes the corresponding channel decoder, digital terminal (bit synchronization, frame synchronization, tapping), and serial interface communication receiving module. The software of every module is designed. For some modules, this paper proposes the algorithm based on timing state machine. Moreove , every module is programmed and simulated in MAXPLUSII.At last, the whole system software graphic editor files and hardware debugging results are shown. Some questions in the software design and hardware debugging are analyzed.The results of software simulation and hardware debugging indicate: the communication system is designed correctly and the performance is excellent.
