After 90's, the situation of traffic accident in China deteriorates. The department of traffic and other correlative department need vivid animation to reconstruct the traffic accident. With the development of technique of virtual reality and computer animation, using computer animation to reconstruct the traffic accident becomes possible. The three-dimensional animation simulation system of traffic accident is researched in this paper. Based on technique of virtual reality, different functional modules of the animation simulation system are partitioned. The method that based on the object model to construct the virtual environment of traffic accident is brought forward. Some three-dimensional models correlative to traffic accident are constructed and read in OpenGL program. The simulation of tow vehicles collision is primary part of the paper. The collision detection model of tow vehicles collision is researched, and the algorithm is implemented. Based on physics, the method of ascertain the movement of vehicles which participate in collision and the program to implement the method are brought forward. The user interface of the three-dimensional animation simulation system of traffic accident is introduced in this paper. Based on the theory of computer animation and the method of building computer animation with OpenGL, the animation of the simulation is protracted, optimized and output. At last, the research work in this paper is summarized, and some advice to future research is given.
