| Readability is the lifeblood for a newspaper and it is crucial for the power of newspapers to lead the public opinion in our socialist market economy. It also contributes much to the competitive edge of the Chinese press in the international arena. This thesis compares the readability of Chinese news and English news by examining their structural patterns, leads, expressive techniques, the use of direct quotations and the use of news backgrounds. It also delves into the causes of the differences in their readability. The author concludes that Chinese journalists should learn from their western counterparts so as to refresh the arsenal of writing skill and therefore enhance the readability of our Chinese news. |
