Distributed multimedia surveillance system, called as Third-Generation Surveillance System, integrates variety of multimedia information, interactivity of computers, and distribution of communication together with Real-time of surveillance.The generality, usability and expandability are insufficient in the present digital multimedia surveillance systems, and most of them cannot be adapted to the fluctuation of available network bandwidth. To enhance their generality and usability, a Browser/Server based multimedia surveillance system structure is put forward, taking the Media-Streaming System structure as a reference. And, to improve their expandability, based on DirectShow architecture, a Component Object Model based software architecture, is designed. Also, an adaptive control strategy and method is introduced, and the closed loop feedback transmission system is accomplished.The requirement of continuous retrieval, and the presence of multiple media streams whose display must proceed in a mutually synchronized manner are the distinguishing features that are unique to media streaming applications. But, on the receiving side, they are greatly influenced by the uncertainty of the network and the complicity of coding, decoding processes. Synchronization principles are discussed. A synchronization model using audio as the time-master, and the judge rules, are given. Then, on the browser side, a new synchronization algorithm is constructed. Experimental results show that the algorithm can realize an accurate and credible synchronization.Based on the model of streaming media that the paper has put forward, a Browser/Sever and Component Object Model based multimedia surveillance system is accomplished. Experimental results show that the system can provide real-time multimedia services at different quality levels, and that it has better generality, usability, and expandability.
