The Study Of Adaptive Streaming System Based On The DASH Protocol

Along with the expansion of high-speed wireless networks, the video service has made up a rapidly growing part of the Internet traffic, thus the technology of live streaming has been brought up by researchers and developers. It’s significant to guarantee best user experience as well as bandwidth efficiency throughout different network access technologies with dynamically varying network conditions. One of the best solutions for such problem is adaptive streaming, which allows to dynamically adjusting the bit-rate of the stream according to varying network conditions and users’ requirements. However, for the mobile smart terminals, the technology confronts a bottleneck because of the diversity of streaming protocols between different platforms. Thus, this thesis proposed a systematic solution for adaptive streaming for wireless networks, which includes the study of newly established streaming standard MPEG-DASH protocol, an adaptive decision algorithm for streaming client and an implementation for adaptive streaming system based on the proposed protocol and algorithm.This thesis started by the study of the newly established ISO standard MPEG-DASH protocol, discussed its structure and adaptation mechanism. According to the protocol, this thesis then brought up a novel adaptation decision algorithm, which can improve the performance of the client of the MPEG-DASH based streaming system, and verified its optimization by emulation. At last, this thesis designed and implemented a client middleware with the algorithm based on the proposed algorithm as well as the MPEG-DASH protocol. The architecture and essential modules design were provided, as well as the test schemes. The test results showed that the algorithm proposed in this thesis has made improvements of the adaptive streaming system.
