The Distance Learning platform combines the real-time video, thereal-time audio and the teaching tools. These characteristics make theinformation shared and communicated between teachers and students easily byInternet, which results in teaching and answering in-distance. Thedevelopment and application of the Distance Learning system have been one ofthe hot spot of the network application. However, streaming media is atechnology that allows audio-video and other multimedia played in a real-timeand unnecessarily-downloaded way on Internet. The appearance of streamingmedia has met the needs for the current development of multimedia. In fact,it is growing as the main technology of multimedia delivery. It is especiallyurgent and significant to make some research on the Distance Learning systembased on streaming media.First, this paper introduces some elementary concept of thesynchronization of multimedia stream, and analyzes why the applications willlose synchronization under IP network environment, then, it presents someworkable solutions. Real-time transport protocol(RTP) and real-timetransport control protocol(RTCP) are introduced in this paper. Then this paperpresents the design and realization of video & audio transport module innetwork multimedia education system, and some principal questions such asframing arithmetic of RTP packet and Congestion control are discussed indetail. Finally, Based on the thorough analysis of the RTP/RTCP protocol andmeanwhile the implementation of DirectShow and MPEG-4 technology, a feasibleproject of distance teaching system is designed. The components, such as thereal-time sample, audio & video encoding, audio & video decoding and display, are programmed and tested.
