Networked Virtual Environments (NVE) is one of the main research areas which combines Virtual Reality (VR) with networking technology. Awareness is becoming the bottleneck of NVE systems. The thesis focuses on enhancing awareness in NVE systems under limited resources. First of all,a new awareness model is presented,and combined with this model,a scheduling framework based on global resources is given. Then a 2-level awareness scheduling algorithm based on fluctuating network conditions is also presented. In the end,an awareness scheduling testing platform is constructed. The detailed contents of the thesis are as follows:Firstly,the background,goals and main contributions of the thesis are described. In chapter 2,the basic concepts and current research on NVE are introduced,then the main progress of the research on the awareness model is described,and the progress and deficiencies of current research on awareness technologies are also deeply analyzed from 3 perspectives:awareness management,transmission technology and augmented awareness. Then in the 3rd chapter,the thesis presents a new awareness model AM-NEVEN,and defines the key components,such as Awareness Objects,Awareness Levels,Interactive Tasks,and Area of Interest. In the following chapter,an adaptive awareness scheduling framework based on the global resources is presented,which schedules the awareness based on network and host resources,supports interaction with users,and coordinates the scheduling process according to the media types and characteristics of the awareness objects. In chapter 5,a 2-level scheduling algorithm,scheduling among different awareness objects and scheduling in the same type of awareness information,is given. The scheduling strategy is established and the algorithms are described,analyzed and verified. In chapter 6,an awareness scheduling testing platform is constructed. In the end,the work of the thesis is summarized,and the future work is described.
