With the development of ASIC technology, the improvement of PC processor's performance and the popularity of Internet, multi-channel real-time surveillant system has become a developing hotspot. Novel video compression technique, PC based structure and Network transmission makes it excel to the former system. In my thesis, a multi-channel real-time surveillant system on basis of PCI bus will be proposed in details.In this thesis, the history and development of surveillant system, which mainly includes the effects or illuminations of the object-based code method in MPEG-4 protocol and the object-based multimedia researching method in MPEG-7, are introduced firstly in chapter one. Subsequently, the various audio and video compression protocols in surveillant system, especially the fundamentals of wavelet compression technology are introduced in chapter two. The comparison between wavelet transform and DCT transform is given. The schemes of intra-frame coding and sequence frame coding based on wavelet compression are used as a standard in current system. In chapter three, all kinds of projects which may be used in current or future surveillant system, especially SOC^ SOPC and Multimedia processor, are analyzed and compared in detail. With the gradual maturation of hard-disk recording and the enhancement of PCI bus, a corresponding plan of multi-channel surveillant system, which considers the feasibility of current technology and product cost, are put forth. Then, Chapter four describes the details of the implement of hardware including the introduction of the main ICs and the key techniques in system hardware design. Chapter five briefly introduce the implementation of system software including DSP, FPGA, Device Driver and PC control Programming. The last chapter drew a conclusion to the system and made some suggestion according to improvement and updating of the current system.
