Recently,multi-channel real-time surveillant system has become a developing hotspot. Considering the updated video-compression technology and high performance PC processor,the development of a multi-channel real-time surveillant system,which is based on hardware compression and software decompression,has great appeals due to its high generality. Thus,we propose a multi-channel real-time video surveillant system based on PCI bus.In this thesis,the history and development of video surveillant system are introduced firstly in chapter one. Subsequently,the development of video capture,video compression,video transmission network,video storage and video processing technology are introduced in chapter two. Video compression especially wavelet compression technology,the core technology in the later design is discussed in details. In chapter three,from design methodology aspect,we introduce up-down design technique to analyze the procedure of design of multi-channel real-time video surveillant system,the important part in video surveillant application system. According to the functions and performance guideline of the target design system,we propose the hierarchical design structure of video processing subsystem and host subsystem. Considering the feasibility of current semiconductor technology and product cost,after the comparison among some software and hardware implementation plans,a corresponding plan of multi-channel real-time video surveillant system is put forth. Then,Chapter four describes the details of the implementation of video processing subsystem from processor unit,storage architecture unit,data I/O host-slave bus,data I/O interconnection unit four design aspects. In chapter five,host application programs and windows device driver design based on WDM are discussed. At last,in chapter six we test our design system using video capture rate and compression ratio guidelines. Then we proposed some methods that contribute much to the upgrading of the current system.
