With the development of society and economy, the traffic system became more and more complex. In the interest of providing the management of traffic system with real-time traffic information to achieve efficient management and make full use of the traffic system, we investigate the Traffic Information System based on Video and Image Processing techniques. Three modules constitute the system: Module of Data Compression, Module of Data Processing and Module of Data Transmission. In my thesis, the Module of Data Compression will be proposed in details.In this thesis, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and development of the Traffic Information System are introduced firstly in chapter one. Subsequently, the various video compression protocols in the Module of Data Compression, especially the fundamentals of wavelet compression technology are introduced in chapter two. The comparison between wavelet transform and DCT transform is given. The schemes of intra-frame coding and sequence frame coding based on wavelet compression are used as a standard in current system. In chapter three, briefly introduce the hardware design of a collection system of traffic information , all kinds of projects which may be used in current or future data compression, especially SOC SOPC and Multimedia processor, are analyzed and compared in detail. Considering the feasibility of current technology and product cost, the module of data compression is put forth. Then, Chapter four describes the details of the implement of hardware including the introduction of the main ICs and the key techniques in system hardware design. Chapter five briefly introduces the implementation of system software including DSP, FPGA and PC control Programming. The last chapter drew a conclusion and made some suggestion according to improvement and updating of the Module of Data Compression.
