As the Bioartificial Liver is a new subject that has witnessed just initial research, only a few countries are conducting research on application of the clinical use of the Bioartificial Liver. Development of the bioreactor, which is used to culture the hepatocyte, has not yielded a definite result. Discussions of this thesis focus mainly on the SBR, a new type of bioreactor. The thesis is part of a project on the Bioartificial Liver bioreactor, which is an international project of cooperation between China and Australia. The main objective of this project is to design the milling system of the bioreactor, to test and study the milling effect.First, the thesis analyzes the principle of impeller by making comparison among a variety of impellers, eventually coming up with a unique design of a double screen lift impeller. Secondly, the thesis discusses the selection of the motor, which is the source of power for the milling system. The stepping motor, which meets practical requirements, is selected. According to the characteristics of the stepping motor, the open-loop control solution was adopted. Ways are also discussed to reduce noise and heat. Thirdly, the thesis works out the design of the pulse production circuit, which makes possible manual control over the milling speed of the impeller. Finally, the thesis analyzes in an in-depth manner the milling effect of the double screen left impeller with some pre-designed experiments on milling effect, including the effects of milling, lifting and suspension. As a r鐂ult, valuable test data have been obtained with some initial conclusions. This has proved in a preliminary the feasibility of applying the milling system in the bioreactor.
