In2012, a number of food safety issues happened. In the same year, media pay close attention on the food safety issues. From focusing on illegal cooking oil to leather shoes manufacturing yogurt, discussion on new standard of potable water, plasticizers and the continuing discussed issues of dairy safety, media plays a more and more important role in the area of food safety issues. Media has become the main way for the public to get to know society issues. The way of reporting food safety issues not only influence how to public treats social issues, but also has a big effect on the further cognition of public on media. As a result, media reports on food safety issues are especially important.In this thesis, text analysis and content analysis are adopted as main research methods. Through detailed summarizing and depth analysis in five aspects---number of reports first, reporting styles, reporting themes, reporting pages and reporting orientations, the author analyze the characteristics of food safety issues presented in paper media and at the same time, Also several representative cases in the samples are selected for depth analysis, such as the reports of illegal cooking oil in People’s Daily, China Food Newspaper and South Metropolitan Daily, the depth analysis of fake food and health products in China Food Newspaper, the reports of soy sauce produced by industrial salt in South Metropolitan Daily and so on. Through the analysis of reports of food safety issues presented in paper media, the author gets the main characteristics of it. Firstly, the definition of food safety reports is dim, and some of the reports are even insincere and unreal. Secondly, food safety reports are regarded as negative reports, full of excessive negative information. Thirdly, they emphasize on the supervision of food, but not the popularizing of food safety knowledge is not enough. Based on those characteristics, the author presents suggestions and strategies accordingly. Media should, sticking on the principle of objectivity and authenticity, provide correct and authentic information, play the role of advocacy and guidance, improve the role of public supervision and popularize food safety knowledge actively. Besides, government, enterprises as well as media should explore the suitable cooperative mechanism of food safety and news media reports. Only in this way can we find out the problems of media in a better way and guarantee the health development of food safety reports.
