Commercial Press is the greatest private publisher in the modern China. In 30 years ups and downs of the modern China, Commercial Press had many achievements, one of the most significant aspects is to put the modern scientific enterprise theory into practice consciously, which had a great success. This paper starts from the period of 1902 to 1932, the most brilliant stage of it. The paper has a detailed analysis on the Commercial Press's construction of culture in its heyday and gives some personal ideas. The following are the basic structure and main content of the paper:Chapter one is introduction of the topic's origin, the background information of the research, the arrangement of the time and the outline and innovative point of the paper.Chapter two firstly gives an introduction of the development and achievements of the Commercial Press in the first three years of the 20th century. Then it has an introduction of the modern scientific enterprise theory which was theoretical basis and makes a discussion on the definition and function in the aspects of spiritual, material, institutional and behavioral. Lastly, it tries to find the international point between the enterprise culture and the modern scientific enterprise theory of the Commercial Press.Chapter Three analyzes the background of The Commercial Press's culture building over the first 30 years in 20th century, concerning social ideology and culture, market competition and human resource strategy.Chapter Four which is the key part of this thesis features careful study on culture building of The Commercial Press mainly in aspect of core concept of publishing, material culture construction, tradition commemoration and maintaining, regulation and culture reform, innovative spirit and people oriented human resource strategy. The study is based on genuine events in history of the press's development and guided by theories of modern enterprise culture.Last, this thesis is concluded with highlights of The Commercial Press's experiences of culture building and thoughts about it. Hopefully this paper will provide modern publishing enterprises with inspiration and useful experience on culture building.
