Handler has become a main testing tool for discrete semiconductor devices in testing process of the back-end. As China's semiconductor industry was late to get started, most domestic enterprises used to employ manual testing which is inefficient and slow. Now fast and reliable automatic sorting machine has been used to replace manual testing. How to improve testing speed and reliability has always been a key issue in the area of automatic testing research during the past 10 years. Semiconductor industry abroad started up early and is highly developed. Manufacturers abroad have long developed automatic sorting machine of high performance. However, imported automatic sorting machine is much too expensive for domestic users. Home-made machine is cheaper, but failure rate is much higher.In order to meet the company's rising requirements for production throughput and product quality and customers' demand for diversifying appearance, it is proposed to develop and make on our own a handler which is faster, more accurate, easier to maintain.Existing handlers fall into two categories according to the type of device and distribution: vibration plate-to-hopper and tube-to-tube. With the development of industry of discrete semiconductor devices, the tendency of future automatic handlers will be tube-to-tube type because its design complies with the requirements of speed, reliability and appearance for testing machine. The sorting machine developed herein is bucket-to-bucket type which is based on the design of the above-mentioned two kinds of handlers. The newly developed machine combines the advantages of both types and is a supplement to the current sorting machine.Currently the tube-to-tube automatic sorting machine is generally used for high-end customers to ensure quality and appearance of devices; for regular customers, use of vibration plate-to-hopper machine is more common. For devices already in tube which need retesting, there is no corresponding automatic machine. In order to bridge this gap, it has been suggested to develop a tube-to-hopper automatic tester. A thorough study on this topic is done herein, which lays a foundation for the development of tube-to-tube automatic testing and sorting machine in the future.The work done in this article mainly includes: 1. Introduction to the history of automatic sorting machine development, the mechanic and electric systems of the TO220 sorting machine designed and developed herein; explanation of the operation principle of automatic sorting machine.2. Development of feeding module of the automatic testing and sorting machine based on VISUAL C + + 6.0 programming which realizes the function of feeding from a tube.3. Development of the testing module of the automatic testing and sorting machine based on VISUAL C + + 6.0 programming which fulfils the function of transistor sorting.4. Development of the sorting module of the automatic testing and sorting machine based on VISUAL C + + 6.0 programming which implements the test through cooperation with the testing system.5. Development of the man-machine interface module of the automatic testing and sorting machine based on VISUAL C + + 6.0 programming which implements the three functions of testing interface, sorting interface and system setup.
