In the context that transmission speed is faster and faster, jitter for high-speed se-rial communication system for the assessment and design work has become increasingly important theoretical and engineering significance. On the basis of past jitter research, jitter decomposition and analysis on the theoretical study will be more scientific under-standing and the elimination of jitter for reducing the error rate to ensure the communi-cation quality. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method and Hilbert-Huang (HHT) time-frequency analysis methods in recent years have emerged in the signal processing in the field of new technologies. Because of its many advantages and potential on signal processing area, this article attemptd to use HHT method apply to jitter analysis and jit-ter decomposition, provided a new path for extracting jitter characteristics, decomposing jitter accurately and done some theoretical exploration and expansion of applications on the basis of previous work. The main work of this paper is as follows:(1) First this paper introduced the concept of jitter, jitter definitions and classifica-tion of jitter ,explained the source of jitter, relationship of jitter and BER and jitter phase noise and introduced the function and jitter noise, jitter, jitter component model and the statistical characteristics of model is defined.Second we summarized jitter analysis methods and applications, Done some simulation experiments and emulated and their strengths and weaknesses. Then an overview of the current comparison method for measuring jitter is discussed.(2) Gave a detailed description of the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) proc-ess and the characteristics of this method,compared the advantages and shortages of Short-time Fourier transform, Wigner-Ville distribution and wavelet analysis and ob-tained high-resolution of HHT time-frequency analysis method and the strong adaptive characteristics .Last also discussed and summarized application and shortcomings of the FFT algorithm and the Tailfit algorithm in jitter decomposition.(3) Focused on the HHT application in jitter decomposition and jitter analysis pro-posed new method and theory, the first use of HHT method of time-frequency analysis can be a clearer picture of its observations to deterministic jitter in the frequency modu- lation and amplitude modulation. Then use the EMD decomposition made directly to attempt on the total jitter decomposition. Then proposed a new method of HHT spectral filtering in jitter decomposition, compared several its traditional method in jitter de-composition, and get the advantages and disadvantages, Last this paper deal with some experimental jitter data to prove its role in practical applications.
