"Animal Robot" project is State Natural Sciences Fund item.The research of the project has acquired primary fruit.This task bases on the "Robot bird" project,studies a kind of design method of GPS orientation system based on ARM9 MPU,in order to realize the orientation and navigation funnction when pigeon is flying.This system can make the "Robot bird" play more important role in larger range and more domain,buildup the practicability and actual combat.Paper researchs and designs the core circuit system and patulous circuit based on MPU S3C2410,customizes WINCE software platform according to the hardware system. We adopt Embedded Visual C++ 4.0 development environment to develop application in WINCE operating system in order to realize the communication function between GPS and processor,orientation and display function,control function.The system is divided three function modules,GPS taking over terminal module,communication module and monitor module.The paper discusses the function and design scheme of each module particularly.GPS taking over terminal module realizes GPS data collection and automatic control function; communication module realizes transfer function of order and data between GPS taking over terminal module and communication module;monitor module realizes orientation data display and manual control.The design of system is divided hardware design and software design.The task of the hardware design is to accomplish core board and expansion of circuit board such as serial interface and LCD interface.The task of the software design is to accomplish function of customization of WINCE operating system,collection of orientation data,data processing and display,control of the pigeon.The result of the experiment proves that the embedded orientation system has realized the basic orientation and control function.The longitude, latitude and speed can be displayed through interface between human and machine.We realize the coordinate conversion of longitude and latitude using Gauss algorithm,display the anchor point and flight route in plane Cartesian coordinate system.It can adjust the direction of flight according to the set route and scope of margin of error.
