With China's economic development, demand for oil increases so fast that more and more oil wells are built. The running conditions of oil well equipment directly affect the output of oil. Therefore, in order to get the oil well equipment trouble clearing in time, we need the real-time monitoring system of oil well equipment to get the equipment running information. Traditional monitoring methods such as periodic inspection by workers and other undeveloped methods can't meet the demand of development of oil field production automation. Effective modern supervisory management to oil well production has become an important subject in oil field production automation.Most of oil wells are distributed in the oil field with large area and complex geographical environment, and the number of oil well is very large. Using wired communication system for data transmission is too difficult, too expensive and not practical. GPRS-based wireless transmission system is not only able to achieve long-range wireless data transmission, but also very easy to construct network. At the same time, the functions of traffic billing and always on-line make GPRS have the immeasurable prospect for development in the field of oil well monitoring system.This paper presented a remote monitoring system based on ARM-based embedded system and GPRS. It relied on GPRS network which covers around the world and using GPRS wireless data service access to the Internet for data communication. So we could achieve the goal of monitoring oil wells.First, this paper introduced several approach of remote data transmission system for oil wells recently and compares the advantages and disadvantages of each method. By analyzing the ways of remote data transmission technology, the paper selected the way of using GPRS technology to transmit oil wells'data. Second, the paper introduced the basic principles of GPRS technology and analyzes the feasibility of GPRS technology. Based on the analysis of GORS technology, the paper chose a specific application of GPRS communication. After GPRS applications had been determined, the paper designd the overall structural of remote monitoring system for oil wells. The next job was to build RTU hardware platform, and migrate the Linux operating system on the embedded ARM system. At last, the paper introduced the RTU and back-office monitoring center software design process. Through the above work, the goal of using GPRS module to transmit oil wells'data wirelessly was finally achieved.And the feasibility of using GPRS technology for oil well real-time monitoring was verfied by experiments. So the staff in the back-office monitoring center can get remote monitoring data of oil wells and control oil wells'operational status, and this system improved the level of automation in oil production management.
