In this paper, the module of GPRS communication and remote vedio monitoring that needed in smart home system have been study in depth. And the basic principles of systems development and development process are described. Function of the smart home system implementation is based on embedded Linux. In terms of hardware, the system uses PXA270 as the main chip, and use the SIM300-GPRS module. In the operating system,Linux operating system which is one of the most popular open source and free OS is adopted. Linux is widely used in embedded field for its small size and portability can be cut. In terms of software, according to the actual situation of the hardware, complete software design, make the corresponding BOOTLOADER, then according to the system's requirements, OS kernel can be made and the file system will be created. The paper mainly focuses on software design and gives an account of software development for modules after environment has been built, including messaging operations, acquisition by USB camera and remote video access. With the serial communication technology, AT commands can be send by serial to achieve function of messag sending. In order to realize the remote video monitoring, video data from cameras can be captured through V4L,and chieve local display based on framebuffer technology. To achieve remote access to video, embedded web server should be set up. Finally, a simple GUI interface development has been done to achieve human-computer interaction.
