Because of the related researches about highway tunnel safety assessment methods in worldwide are mainly focused tunnel construction period, it overemphasizes the safety design of tunnel structures. Only a few researches involve the safety assessment methods of tunnel operation period. So it is necessary to make comprehensive assessment on tunnel operation period of china.The traffic accident, fire accident and dangerous chemicals leak accident are analyzed. The safety assessment method of long highway tunnel operation period suitable for the practical situation in China is proposed. This method was also used to make the safety assessment of Cang-Ling tunnel operation period. The main conclusions are as follows:1) The highway tunnel operation management security, highway tunnel operation safety facilities and highway tunnel operation of its own characteristics are analyzed.2) The reasons of the highway tunnel traffic accident are analyzed from people, vehicles, tunneling conditions and operation management. The causes of the highway tunnel fire accident are analyzed by using FTA. The models of the highway tunnel dangerous chemicals leak accident and dangerous chemicals explosion accident are researched.3) The safety assessment method of the EU about the long highway tunnel operation period is analyzed. Based on the practical situation in China, the safety assessment method suitable for the practical situation in China is proposed. The assessment process includes four aspects: risk factor assessment firstly, and then safety factor assessment, and then according to the above results to calculate the percentage of the tunnel, in the end to define the tunnel safety grade.4) The safety assessment method is used to evaluate Cang-Ling tunnel operation period. The assessment results also show that the safety grade of Cang-Ling tunnel is excellent, it meets the requirement.
