Competitive intelligence, together with human resources, material resources and capital, is regarded as the fourth manufacturing elements for corporations, playing a critical role in their course of survival and development. It helps to grasp changes in the external environment and enhance the accuracy of decision-making, thus reducing its business risk. The strategic position of China's private enterprises in economic and social development has continued to rise. However, the growth process of these enterprises shows great instability, usually called"Epiphyllum Phenomenon", mainly because of defects in management and decision-making system and non-adaptability to dynamic competitive environment. How to ensure the sustainable development of private enterprises has become an imminent issue in China's economic and social development. The strategic integration of a working system of competitive intelligence in line with the reality of private enterprises is an effective solution to this issue.Basing on the analysis of the status quo and characteristics of competitive intelligence in private enterprises in addition to the characteristics and development strategy existing in start-up phase, rapid stage of development and stable development phase, this paper separately proposes an interpersonal intelligence strategy in start-up phase, a competitive intelligence project strategy in rapid stage of development and a collective intelligence strategy in stable development phase, attempting to propose some general guidelines for practice of competitive intelligence in private enterprises by combining the theory and methods of competitive intelligence with the features and characteristics of private enterprises.
