With the rise and development of knowledge economy, the competition of enterprises focuses on "human" gradually. Human is the most active factor in enterprise, so human that holds the pivotal knowledge and technology has important effect on the survival and development of enterprise. On account of paying little attention to employee motivation, there often appear the problems of skilled worker demission or employee frequent quit during the development of private enterprise, which limits the development of private enterprise badly. Consequently, studying the employee motivation of private enterprise is of perspective theoretical and practical value.On the base of classical motivation theory, we study the employee motivation of private enterprise with the method of questionnaire investigation and statistics analysis. The main content of this research includes the investigation of employee needs, the needs' specialty and difference of different employee, the measure of employee motivation that are frequently used by private enterprise, and the effect of the motivating measure. And the result indicates as follows: (1) The main needs of employee in private enterprise is growth need, next is existence need, and relatedness need is the weakest. (2) Different employee has different main needs, and their need-hierarchy has ascending trend along with changing of their age and length of service. (3) The physical motivation is main method in the domestic private enterprise, such as giving bonus, giving a raise, and so on; and the psychic motivating measure is also used frequently, such as commending, building a good environment for working, communicating with employee by all means, and so on. (4) The same motivating measure has different effect on different person, and the motivating measure will have good effect if it can satisfy employee's needs.According to our conclusion, the private enterprise should insist on the rule of motivating employee on the base of their needs, and use the physical and psychical measure in order to improve the motivating effect.
