Since the reform and opening-up policy was introduced, the higher vocational education in China has seen rapid development with the popularization of the higher education. With the increasing number of Higher Vocational Colleges in China, the colleges take "wide" approaches to attract students so as to ease the problem of lack of students. Therefore, vocational college students with learning difficulties have become a common problem in higher vocational education, especially their learning difficulties in mathematics, which has seriously affected their professional courses, their study of subsequent courses and their development of life-long learning ability. What’s more, it has formed a vicious circle and it will seriously hinder the normal and healthy development of Higher Vocational Colleges and it will affect the quality of talents in these colleges.With the present situation, it is imperative to carry on an effective reform for higher mathematics teaching. Only if we have a full understanding of the problems of the reform, the mathematics learning features of the students in Higher Vocational Colleges and the requirements for mathematics in higher vocational education, can the reform have a definite object in view. Therefore, it is necessary that we study this topic based on the combination of theory and practice.This paper mainly adopts the methods of questionnaire survey and interview, and carries on the analysis of the following six aspects of outstanding and poor students in mathematics from two higher vocational colleges in Hunan province, such as their learning adaptability, learning interest, learning motivation, mathematics learning achievement experience, confidence in mathematics learning, learning methods and strategies. This study suggests that their learning maladjustment in mathematics, their low cognitive level in mathematics and their lack of learning motivation are the main internal causes for the students learning difficulties in mathematics. The deficient occupation accomplishment for teachers, the imperfect learning evaluation system and the bad school ethos are the main external causes. It is believed in this study that as long as the teacher’s teaching methods are appropriate, it can successfully prevent and transform those higher vocational students having difficulties in learning mathematics. On the one hand, aimed at the overall improvement in mathematics learning, we can adopt some measures to prevent students’learning difficulties in mathematics, such as constructing the excitation mechanism of learning motivation, the optimization mechanism of learning environment, the perfect mechanism of learning evaluation system, and the construction mechanism of good school ethos. On the other hand, based on the course characteristics of mathematics in higher vocational education and the psychological characteristics of higher vocational students having difficulties in learning mathematics, some feasible countermeasures have been made in this study based on teaching practice.
