With the development of computer networks, library management mode has embarked upon a journey of revolution. Digitalized storage, processing and transmission of information resources have been made possible by changes in social infrastructure, the growth of the knowledge economy and advancement in information technology triggered by network technology. Under such circumstances, library automation can no longer meet the requirements of social development, so intelligent and digital library has come into being as a new form of library. In this thesis, a library management system is designed and developed after researching on the ways and means by which library management is conducted, with in-depth investigation on library management. This system makes library management evolve from automation to networking by integrating books and readers'information management, record keeping and query, book circulation and other functions together on the basis of B/S mode. The system has adopted SQL Server 2005 as its backstage database since SQL Server is a good relational database. It has the special advantage in its usability, scalability, reliability, data warehousing and other aspects with exceptional performances. Taking into account the system's compatibility, its development costs, as well as its convenience and ease of development, Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 is used as its system development tool which adopts.NET Framework (version 2.0) and is an ideal application development tool in this digital network era. This thesis begins the discussion from the system's development background, its social needs and the significance of its realization. Then it focuses mainly on the system's design and its implementation. In the system design section, the whole scheme is proposed on the system goal, the mentality and the system analysis; in particular, the function design and the database design of the system are described in detail. In the system implementation section, methods are introduced about how to implement each module of the system. Lastly, this thesis points out some deficiencies that still exist in the system, and gives an objective assessment of the final results through a full range of system testing.
